What is Community Supported Agriculture? (CSA)

What is a CSA veg-box farm?

Community supported agriculture (CSA) is a partnership between farmers and consumers in which the responsibilities and rewards of farming are shared.

Sometimes known as crop sharing, it connects the producer and consumers within the food system more closely by allowing the consumer to subscribe to the harvest of a certain farm or group of farms.

Direct connection…

The approach can vary. Consumers, often described as CSA members, are closely linked to the farm and the production of their food, and provide support that goes beyond a straightforward marketplace exchange of money for goods.

The real local food revolution…

CSA helps to address increasing concerns about the lack of transparency, sustainability and resilience of our food system. It is one of the most radical ways that we can re-take control and ownership of our food system.

“The truth is: the natural world is changing and we are totally dependent on that world. It provides our food, water and air. It is the most precious thing we have and we need to defend it” - Sir David Attenborough

Benefits for all…

Farmers receive a more stable and secure income and closer connection with their community, and consumers benefit by eating fresh healthy local food, feeling more connected to the land where their food is grown and learning new skills.

 About The Farm

Founder and owner Alex Horne established The Essex Allotment in 2018. Inspired by his grandfather’s love of gardening/growing and influenced by his mother’s creativity through floral art, Alex acquired his first Allotment in the spring of 2017.

Prior to this Alex spent 14 years at supermarket giant Tesco and a year at Cancer Research UK before making a life changing decision to quit the corporate, commercial world and pursue a vision of creating a market garden business based on the principles of regenerative agriculture.
